Literature, drama and native language

Joy of self-expression at the Helsinki Finnish Adult Education Centre

Come along and feel the joy of expressing yourself through literature and drama! Our courses in Literature, drama and native language teach you how to develop in self-expression in a creative and immersive way. Our broad course selection has courses for both goal-oriented studying and for recreational self-expression. Build your own learning path from our writing and acting courses for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners.

Try something new on our prose, lyrics, drama and creative writing courses and workshops. Get encouraging feedback on your texts and engage in discussions on our creative writing groups. Find your voice in producing text and learn to understand the structures of characters, relationships and environments. Participation requires an open mind and a willingness to put yourself out there through your own writing. Suitable for online writers, too.

Your knowledge of literature will expand through lectures, book clubs and author visits. Literature book clubs are meeting places where we can continue the dialogue between the reader and the book. Participation does not require any prior study of literature: a desire to read is enough.

I have gained a lot of new experiences and knowledge from the courses at the adult education centre. The teachers are excellent!

Our theatre courses and theatre visits show you the diverse world of performing arts. In theatre arts courses, you can learn about improvisation, recitation, acting or clowning. In changing special courses, you learn about mask, community or story theatre. You can develop self-awareness and self-expression in interactive courses that draw on theatre techniques. You do not have to be an actor to find nuances and depth in your self-expression and interaction skills in these courses.

Most of the Helsinki Finnish Adult Education Centre’s theatre groups, such as Opistoteatteri, Studionäyttämö, Tunneteatteri, Maunula-teatteri and Theatre Vuosaari, are traditional amateur groups whose semester culminates in a performance. The impro theatre group Pitkä Impro Helsinki performs on a more regular basis, as the group practises by performing.

Our native language teaching begins with the basics of writing and reading and expands to include the writing of factual texts, language research and language maintenance. You can develop your language skills in grammatical correctness, Finnish language and text guidance, and lectures.
